NYEGE NYEGE. An enormous festival. Tonnes of music from different genres. Revelers from all over the globe. Set by River Nile. Think Tomorrowland, only now, right in the heart of Africa.
This was my experience last weekend when I boarded an overland truck to Jinja. While it had been hyped by my friends from the 6-country trip in December, I could never have been prepared for the pompous nature the festival exuded.
The party began on Thursday evening and went on non-stop until Monday morning. Thousands of merrymakers had 5 stages to choose from, each playing its own kind of music. The stage set-up of each was exquisite, with party lights and theatrical smoke accompanying the devoted Djs. Besides the stages, there were tents dedicated to different DJs that entertained the guests day and night.
There was plenty of food and drinks on sale at affordable prices (half the price you would buy those at Kenyan festivals). Then there was the River Nile, the hammocks, the swings. There was the red cross tent with a steadfast force that collected passed out inebriates for their safekeeping. It really was the grandest festival I’ve been to ever, and my best experience yet, this year.
As if Nyege Nyege didn’t have enough fun activities to offer, Jinja presents plenty opportunities for outdoor fun: mountain biking, white water rafting, bungee jumping, and more.
Below is a collection of pictures, mine and others’ that highlight Nyege Nyege.

See you at Nyege Nyege 2019!
Until next time,
Happy traveling!
